Scar
Scar is a young Kalahari lion, son of the famous Kij Kij males from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
After the two brothers began leaving the park to hunt livestock in nearby Botswana communities, they were relocated to Addo Elephant National Park to protect them. Left without his fathers, Scar found himself facing a new dominant male within the pride — one that began injuring him and likely drove him away.
We encountered Scar in March 2025, beneath the rain of the Kalahari: alone, wounded, yet still incredibly proud. Since July 2025, he has no longer been seen, and his fate remains unknown.
His story is a reminder of how fragile the balance of wildlife truly is. Protecting large predators means more than creating national parks — it also means ensuring coexistence, protection, and a future for one of the last remaining desert lion populations in Africa.
